Hello! I'm Jason, a geek dad from Durham, NC. This blog was conceived as the mutant offshoot of the Random Signal podcast, and it is the exclusive home of the RS Droidcast. I like weird movies, interesting animals, comic books, science fiction, paleontology, and lots of other awesome stuff. I also like cephalopods, so much so that I have a whole other blog just for them! Visit Indie Squid Kid for a Kraken-sized dose of tentacly goodness.
If I made you a mix tape, you could expect to hear the likes of Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Johnny Cash, The Flaming Lips, The Mountain Goats, Talking Heads, Pixies, The Pogues, The Clash, T.Rex, David Bowie, Jonathan Coulton, They Might Be Giants, Guided By Voices, The Magnetic Fields, Guitar Wolf, and The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band.
So I just saw these guys do this song on Conan. They sound like they are trying to be Modest Mouse, and they are probably a bunch of hipster douchebags, but I’m kind of digging it. And I’m pretty sure I have an instant mega-crush on Hannah Hooper.
I have to admit, I was struggling to figure out which character deserved to be the first Know Your DCU of 2011 would be. The choice became much easier to make thanks to The Flaming C. Some of you may recall THIS video I posted earlier in the weekere Conan questions just who one one of the most famous magicians in the DCU is. Well that’s what the Know Your DCUarticle is for, and luckily for Team Coco I’m here to help answer that question.
Zatara made his first appearance in 1938 in the same comic book as Superman, Action Comics #1. John Zatara was a traveling stage magician who could also conjure up magic by speaking the desired effects backwards, a trait he managed to pass on to his daughter Zatana Zatara. While on the road, he’d occasionally fight some crime or the occasional Hell spawn demon. He trained his daughter Zatana in all things magic (both physical and metaphysical), how to work the stage, and how to fight off threats from the underworld (literal, not criminal). Zatara died during the first Crisis, sacrificing himself to Hell to save Zatana’s life.
Currently, his magician nephew Zachary uses the name Zatara for his stage/superhero persona.
